Broadcom WPS: did the fix reach your router firmware?
An answer about a component does not close the review of installed equipment. Connect the research, delivered firmware and the decision about router use.

A status needs a date
The October 19 news article covers Quentin Kaiser’s research, disclosed on October 16, 2026. In his original analysis, he demonstrates Wi-Fi attacks against affected devices without the network password. The statement that examined equipment lacked updates has an October 15 cutoff. The October 20 edit excludes Telenet from the affected scope. Those boundaries do not establish the condition of another device.
Open the item without waiting for a CVE identifier
WPSplinter is the researcher’s assigned name, not a CVE, as the public documentation explains. In Pentesty’s assessment, the maintenance queue needs to accept that reference without inventing a formal identifier or closing the issue because one is absent.
Create an internal record with the source, consultation date and assets requiring clarification. Separate a possible match from confirmation about installed firmware. This distinction complements vulnerability triage and remediation decisions: an unresolved item can have an owner and deadline before receiving a CVE.
Identify the software present on the equipment
Start with the gateway supporting a business function, including equipment supplied by the ISP. Record the model, hardware revision, full firmware version and who controls distribution. A chipset name or community-list entry does not replace assessment of that combination.
Ask the supplier to connect its answer to the component and product version. If the business cannot observe the internal software, document that limitation. Do not try to compensate with unauthorized access to ISP management or firmware obtained from an unknown source.
Request four answers that can be checked
An answer about a development-level fix still leaves stages before operation. Request evidence for each relevant transition, identifying the covered product, date and owner. Connect the responses to the same maintenance record.
- Component: which change addresses the described condition, and which reference supports that answer?
- Product: which firmware compatible with the model and hardware revision integrates the change?
- Delivery: who distributes that version, and how does the business identify whether its device received it?
- Use: which version is running, and which checks close the change?
The change needs to preserve the service’s function
Agree on an authorized sample or maintenance window with the connectivity owner. Before updating or replacing equipment, identify authentication, telephony, connections and other functions depending on it. Define which outcomes will be observed and when the work should stop.
After the change, record the running version and test legitimate functions with fictional data where applicable. Include a decision about the previous configuration and recovery if something fails. The risk owner should participate in that alternative, particularly when returning to earlier equipment would reinstate an unresolved condition.
An exception needs an owner and a closing condition
If no applicable update or sufficient answer is available, record who decides whether to retain, restrict or replace the equipment. Request a review deadline and the evidence that would close the exception. Our discussion of support and acceptance in router procurement helps bring the open issue into contract renewal.
A temporary measure should state its intended effect and limitations. Network segmentation may limit consequences for other systems without establishing that radio processing was corrected. Distinguish the operational measure from the firmware conclusion, and reassess when new information arrives from the vendor or ISP.
Frequently asked questions
Is every device containing a Broadcom chip vulnerable?
Do not draw that conclusion from the component brand. Assess the product, revision, firmware and corresponding evidence; research lists vary in coverage and confirmation.
Does disabling WPS in the interface resolve it?
The researcher’s FAQ warns that the toggle may not disable the affected parser. Request product-specific confirmation rather than treating the setting as proof of remediation.
Does the absence of a CVE justify closing the ticket?
Keep the technical reference and internal identifier, with an owner and deadline. The absence of a number does not answer the question about the installed asset.
Must an attack be performed before making a decision?
Begin with firmware identification, an applicable supplier answer and change acceptance. Additional assessment needs its own authorization and scope; this article does not propose reproducing exploitation.
