Defender is running: is its protection still receiving updates?
Service state alone does not establish whether protection remains current. Connect version, timing, distribution and the handling of update failures.

What the reproduction establishes
On October 5, 2026, SpiderLabs published a laboratory reproduction of BigDiskBuster: locally running code interfered with a Defender update while the service remained active. This does not establish an observed remote attack.
The demonstration follows an actual endpoint update. Its public description does not fully specify privileges, build and configuration; it therefore does not establish universal compatibility or execution by any standard user.
Separate availability from updating
The inventory should answer three questions: which device was observed, what state it reported and when that report arrived. A dashboard can display the last information received from a machine that no longer sends data. Treat evidence age as part of the result alongside product condition.
Microsoft documentation distinguishes security intelligence and product updates. Keep these in separate fields linked to the organization’s distribution channel. A single green indicator needs a defined meaning, with update criteria and owners for exceptions.
The decision needs to reach every relevant endpoint
Select a sample by operational function, connection pattern and management mechanism. Include devices that spend time disconnected and services with restricted maintenance windows. Establish whether the update rule reaches the groups the inventory considers covered.
Use local information, such as that documented in Get-MpComputerStatus, to compare versions and timestamps with the central record. Check identifiers, time zones and collection times. The OpenSSL remediation delivery analysis provides context for checking actual state after distribution; here, the subject is continuity of protection updates.
Test monitoring with controlled signals
Pentesty proposes beginning with the observation path in an environment agreed with operations. Use a synthetic sample or laboratory rule to represent an endpoint with stale information. Check whether the case reaches its owner and stays visible until an evidence-based conclusion is reached.
If the exercise needs a real test machine, agree with its administrator on a reversible condition, a window and an expected return using approved management mechanisms. Evaluating the handling of stale status does not require running the PoC, exhausting storage or disabling protection.
- Reference: retain state and timing before the exercise, identifying the device.
- Deviation: introduce the authorized test signal and record the rule expected to recognize it.
- Handling: follow the owner, review deadline and evidence supporting the decision.
- Return: check the new endpoint and management states, ending the temporary condition too.
Investigate causes without adopting a ready-made diagnosis
Connect an installation failure with the attempt, device and observed conditions. Error 0x80070643 is generic and does not independently identify BigDiskBuster. Preserve context and refer signs of interference to the responsible team, avoiding a conclusion that every delay confirms an attack.
Review local execution permissions, operational dependencies and coverage limits with their owners. The workstation rebuild analysis helps plan acceptance of a recovered device. It concerns a different environment; the connection is the need to demonstrate the resulting state.
Define closure before the next failure
Establish criteria for returning each machine to its expected state, with observed versions, recent information and recorded outstanding issues. A ticket closed because someone requested another update still needs confirmation that execution occurred and produced the intended result.
Repeat relevant scenarios when distribution, dashboards or ownership change. The report should identify assessed groups and those still lacking sufficient evidence. The deliverable is a verifiable process for noticing and addressing stale protection, with clear limits on security conclusions.
Frequently asked questions
Does an active service establish current protection?
Running state answers a different question. Also check versions, update timestamps and the time of the last observation against the policy and distribution channel in use.
Does the study demonstrate a remote attack against any Windows device?
No. The cited scope is a reproduction involving local execution. The publication does not establish a complete privilege and configuration matrix for every device.
Must I run the proof of concept to assess the process?
Not to verify monitoring and handling. Synthetic signals or an authorized reversible laboratory condition can demonstrate the response path without running interference code.
When can an update failure be closed?
When its owner confirms the expected state and refreshed local and central evidence, recording what was checked, exceptions and remaining limitations.
