EPICS Base 7.0.11: plan for the complete package and older clients
The selected package and the clients that must keep working belong in the remediation plan. Connect the official distribution to the IOC and validate compatibility in a representative environment.

The published fix and the limits of the experiment
An October 28 news report prompted this analysis. On October 27, CISA published four flaws in EPICS Base 7.0.10 and earlier, advising an update to 7.0.11. Causal reported memory corruption and crashes in testing; remote code execution remained potential, not demonstrated.
Start with the IOC and the applications using it
IOC here means input/output controller. Identify the package or build that produced the applicationâs controller and connect it to the process actually in use. Request the vendorâs mapping between the delivered product and included EPICS components.
List this IOCâs clients: operator interfaces, acquisition software and integrations maintained by different teams. Define which functions each client must preserve. Our running-component verification analysis complements integration acceptance.
Choose the distribution before planning the build
The official 7.0.11 release warns that GitHubâs two automatic source archives omit PVA submodules. Check the distribution designated by maintainers, the signature file and the teamâs verification procedure. A matching tag name is insufficient to treat different artifacts as equivalent.
Connect the received package with the approved build and the delivery intended for the equipment. For a vendor backport, request identification of the incorporated fixes and supported configurations. Do not demand an identical upstream version number as the sole evidence; equally, do not accept a generic update description without a mapping to the delivered product.
Turn compatibility into concrete cases
The EPICS release notes warn that stricter Channel Access validation may affect older clients. For acceptance testing, reproduce the client, controller and configuration combinations actually used by operations, with synthetic data and no connection to physical equipment. Keep exploitation testing out of the installationâs remediation procedure.
Choose legitimate behaviors with observable outcomes: reading a simulated value, receiving variable updates and reconnecting a client after a planned interruption in the replica. Include the applicationâs usual data sizes and types. Compare outcomes before and after the change while keeping test conditions equivalent.
Confirm that the client continues updating required readings. Also check failure handling and recovery. For an incompatibility, identify the affected combination and discuss a supported fix. Avoid weakening validation to hide the problem or approving every client based on a single interface.
Agree on the maintenance window and recovery with operations
The maintenance plan should identify the IOC being changed, its dependent consumers and how to confirm restoration. Agree on stop criteria with the physical-process owner. Assess command functions in simulation; any operational intervention needs the installationâs own procedure and authorization.
Prepare recovery from a deployment that fails acceptance, considering the exposure of the previous state. Restoring a package does not close the security issue. Our OT remote-access analysis complements connectivity controls.
Acceptance should connect package, controller and client
Provide a matrix for each combination. Include equipment whose version or maintenance depends on third parties.
- Distribution: origin, verification and components present in the approved package.
- Controller: delivered build and process examined after the change.
- Clients: tested combinations and legitimate functions that remained available.
- Exceptions: incompatibilities, pending deliveries and the review condition.
Frequently asked questions
Does IOC mean indicator of compromise in this article?
Here it means an input/output controller in the EPICS environment. The inventory should connect that controller with its application and dependent clients.
Can we download any archive bearing the 7.0.11 tag?
Follow the distribution designated by the project and check the received package. Preserve the connection between origin, verification, included components and the build intended for the installation.
Can a vendor backport be accepted?
Request evidence of the incorporated fixes and covered product. Validate the delivery and integrations; a different commercial version needs technical mapping, not simply a promise.
Must we reproduce crashes to validate the update?
Plan legitimate cases in a representative environment isolated from physical operations. Acceptance should establish delivery and compatibility; fault-inducing tests need a separate scope and authorization.
