LXD and MicroCloud: verify the fix on every cluster member
The maintenance record should identify the version serving each administrative endpoint. Track the cluster update with evidence for every member.

Turn the advisory into an acceptance criterion
In its October 28 advisory, Canonical confirmed CVE-2026-112816: someone with access to the HTTPS API and a trusted clientâs public certificate can assume that identity. The impact depends on the privileges involved. The notice lists Snap fixes for LXD 6.10.1, 5.21.9, 5.0.11 and 4.0.15, and MicroCloud 3.4.1 and 2.1.5, and describes a progressive rollout to stable.
For a business, the work starts with a verifiable question: which servers still handle administrative requests with a version that needs fixing? Define a list of members and owners. Each entry needs to end with its own decision, including when maintenance cannot happen in the first available window. A general note about the cluster makes an exception harder to locate later.
Connect each endpoint to the right server
Identify administrative addresses, members, installed products and permitted connection origins. The LXD network exposure documentation explains that network access requires configuration beyond the local socket. Use that information to examine the actual configuration alongside network rules and administration paths. Identify which member responds through each examined path, including integrations used by other teams.
The LXD snap documentation provides snap info lxd for channel information and the installed version, and snap list lxd for the local installation. Preserve the output with the server identifier and collection time. A result without that association becomes less useful when several members look alike.
Track delivery of the selected version
LXD guidance requires the same version on all cluster members and, ideally, the same Snap revision. Plan the change using the procedure that applies to the environment. Create a record connecting each member, tracked channel, previous version, approved version and observed result. Include MicroCloud where installed, using its own advisory and procedure to define the target.
The Snap documentation provides snap changes and snap tasks for examining changes. Connect the change identifier to the maintenance record. If the result differs from the approved target, assign someone to investigate delivery. Record the administrative restriction in force and the next authorized step while the exception remains open, with a review deadline.
Validate access and continuity with a defined sample
Prepare an authorized validation using a test identity and synthetic resources. Specify the permitted administrative operation and a request that should be refused. Record the endpoint, member, presented identity, observed decision and time. These elements help teams discuss an unexpected result without distributing real credentials in the report.
The exercise observes the policy applied to the sample without reproducing the CVE. An accepted or refused operation alone does not establish the fix, which also requires confirmation of the corresponding version. Add a legitimate operation representative of the service, selected with its owner, and define cleanup and stop conditions before testing. Review authentication failures, unavailability or unexpected behavior before approving the maintenance outcome.
Close exceptions and preserve the investigation
Deliver a final list for each member: observed version, examined administrative path, legitimate operation result and remaining exceptions. The platform owner should be able to identify which entries can be closed and which need another decision. Also record who tracks each outstanding issue and what evidence will allow it to be reviewed.
The article on authority to create containers helps review the reach of administrative identities. The analysis of fixes in services using OpenSSL connects installation to the running service. Use these perspectives to define the scope. If earlier access is suspected, preserve relevant records and handle the investigation as a separate workstream with its own owners and evidence.
Frequently asked questions
Is the update command enough to close the task?
Define closure through the version observed on the member, its association with the endpoint and the agreed validation. Preserve the change result to investigate discrepancies.
Why check every cluster member?
A member record helps locate a divergent installation, assign an owner and track the exception. Define the coverage required for the environment being assessed.
Does the test need real clientsâ certificates?
Plan validation with test identities, synthetic resources and specific authorization. Describe what was observed and connect the result to the version examined.
Does the fix conclude a compromise investigation?
Maintenance verifies delivery of the fix. Suspected earlier access requires examination of available records, preservation of evidence and a separate assessment of its scope.
